Bhandara district is located in North-East of Maharashtra. On 1st May 1999, the district was divided from its east – west part and thus Gondia and Bhandara came into existence. Bhandara is an elongated district stretched towards northern and southern direction. Lakhandur is located at the southern limit of the district. The main occupation of the people of this region is agriculture but during the rainy season, the rivers like Vainganga and Chulbandh become flooded and each year Lakhandur and neighbouring area become isolated from other region. This remote, rural, socially and economically disadvantaged and Naxalite-affected taluka place had no facility of higher education till 1993.
After passing H.S.C. it was not possible for the poor and underprivileged students to go to the urban district for higher education. “Shree Kisanrao Khobragade Education Society” realized the urgent need to provide higher education to fill the vacuum and serve the educational interest of the people of the area and established “Yashwantrao Chawhan College of Arts, Commerce & Science” in 1993. The college is affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. The Management Committee consists of socially renowned academic peers.
For the all-round development of the students, curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are taken in the college, which include N.S.S., Adult Education, Environment Awareness and various cultural programmes. Through the NSS unit, the institution adopts different villages for the continuous three years. Along with these activities all the national, government and other university programmes are put into action. Every year the Study Tours are arranged by college. The Physical Education Department of the college trains and sends the students for various inter-collegiate, university level and state level competitions.
College strives level best to inculcate the moral and ethical values in students and make them the ideal citizen. Recently the Commerce and Science faculties received 100% grant. The institution endeavours to send the students from all faculties to the programmes like Avishkar, Indradhanush, Science Olympiad, RD Parade etc. It is another feather in our cap that our college has been selected for the ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan 2.0’. An MoU has been signed with ‘Pratham Education Foundation’, one of the largest non-governmental organizations in the country for innovative learning, an organization created to improve the quality of education in India. Each regular teacher personally helps needy and talented students academically and financially under the Teacher-Mentor Scheme.
We are happy to share that the Management Committee has started Post-Graduation in Geography, Pali, Economics, Sociology, Marathi and Mathematics. To pace with current developments and the need of the surrounding area, we wish to start some professional courses from current session. Only one section from each faculty is granted and the remaining additional sections are run by the Management.
We have well qualified and experienced teaching and non-teaching staff, well equipped laboratory, e-library (Lib-Man & INFLIBNET), Rail-Tel Wi-Fi Campus, in-campus and off-campus playgrounds, for campus security CCTV Surveillance facility, digital projectors equipped classrooms – are some of the special features of our college. To maintain these features, the Management body of the college is always ready with various innovative ideas. Striving for dissemination of knowledge in the surrounding area is the central motive of the college. The quality enhancement will be our continuous efforts, so that not only the students but the common public should also be proud of the college.
